Is Cancer God’s Fault?

When I told people about my cancer, quite a few responses said, ” How could God do such an awful thing?”  I also thought why God allowed such a difficult challenge to me.  When something bad happens, we tend to blame God.  Joni Tada, a quadriplegic artist-evangelist, who has given free wheelchairs all over the world and was recently  diagnosed with breast cancer, says, “ All affliction comes from the hand of our God, and I am content to receive from God,” in her blog.

I highly admire her obedience to God but I don’t think That it was God, who causes sufferings, but the Satan. Our world is full of sufferings, hates, and sorrows because, like a story of Narnia by C.S. Lewis, the “White Witch” (Satan) is reigning here.  As we refused to obey God and chose to live on our own, distrusting God, Sin came in and we live out of His regime. It doesn’t matter how good we are, or the better we are the more we become a target from Satan, like Job in the Old Testament.  Yet, goodness will overcome evil!  God never abandons us.  He comes right next to us when we cry out to Him and walks together through ups and downs with us even though we had refused Him, just as a loving parent comes to rescue a rebellious child who ran away from home, from troubles. He can make goodness out of calamity, like a stained glass made from broken glasses, and everything beautiful in His way. Instead of blaming God, I love Him more – God who is so faithful and merciful.

  1. THESE ARE JUST TRIALS THAT GOD ALLOWS US TO GO THROUGH TO STRENGTHEN OUR FAITH IN HIM. ALSO IF WE HAVE TO GO THROUGHT THIS TRIAL I FEEL THAT GOD IS GOING TO USE US IN SOMEONES ELSES LIFE THAT MAY NOT HAVE THE FAITH THAT YOU DO AND THEY MAY NEED YOUR STRENGTH IN GOD. KATHY, YOU ARE AND INSPIRATION AS TO TRUE FAITH.

  2. Thank you, Kathy, for your thoughtful words. I am agreement with you that God is not to blame. Our world sometimes feels upside down. Along with the wondrous blessings from God, we also see fine people who are trying to live in a way that is pleasing to Him suffer and we see self-serving people reap earthly rewards while others have very little. We have strayed far from the path God would wish for us and have gotten lost. I think finding fault and establishing blame is a useless endeavor. It is our job to do the best we can to set things right by doing our best to stay on the right path and be grateful for the gifts that we have been given, rather than finding a target for our anger about what we have lost. It is a difficult path, and we all falter, but it is essential.

  3. Kathy, you have such a positive attitude, a MUST for overcoming such an illness, Know that Maureen and I are praying for a healing and fast recovery for you, and I am looking forward to seeing you soon. Love too you and George.
